Reddit ads versus Meta ads comparison for B2B SaaS advertising strategy

When Reddit Ads Crush Meta — And When They Don't

When Reddit ads crush Meta, and when they don't

Reddit ads beat Meta when your buyers self-identify in specific communities. If you sell to DevOps engineers, they're in r/devops right now telling each other which monitoring tools suck. Meta beats Reddit when you need retargeting depth or lookalike audiences built from small seed lists. It can also absorb real budget. Neither wins universally.

How Reddit and Meta actually differ for B2B

Reddit targets declared behavior. Community targeting reaches redditors who subscribed to, viewed, or visited specific subreddits in the last 28 days. Ads can serve across Reddit, including placements outside the selected subreddits. Keyword targeting adds a contextual layer by placing ads alongside the conversations redditors are having.

Meta infers. Its detailed targeting builds audiences from demographics, interests, and behaviors gathered across Meta's apps. Since 2025, detailed-targeting exclusions have disappeared, interest categories have begun consolidating, and Advantage+ audience treats most inputs as suggestions. Meta's Andromeda and GEM systems now match ads to people based on creative elements first and audience parameters second.

On Reddit, you pick the room. On Meta, your creative does the qualifying. As Todd Chambers puts it, "Meta has no real native B2B targeting. You reach people through interests, behaviours, lookalikes, and above all creative that self-selects the right audience."

Where Reddit outperforms for B2B

The strongest documented results cluster around technical B2B audiences. Auth0 hit a 68% lower cost per sign-up versus its internal benchmark with CTR 7× above benchmark. Reddit became its second-leading driver of sign-ups across all marketing channels. Reddit published the case study, and the results use Auth0's internal benchmarks without a head-to-head Meta test.

Subreddit relevance beats audience size. Problem-led community and keyword targeting reaches active problem-solvers more effectively than broad interest targeting, which may deliver cheap impressions.

Reddit fails plenty of B2B tests. Niche subreddits also hit volume ceilings fast. If your ideal customer profile doesn't visibly gather in named, active subreddits, Reddit is a coin flip.

Where Meta still wins

  • Audience depth and modeling. Meta retains website custom audiences for 365 days and offers more granular engagement segments, including people who opened a lead form but didn't submit it. Reddit's website retargeting caps at a 90-day lookback, and its engagement retargeting covers interactions with your ads over the past six months. Meta can build lookalikes from a 100-person source audience and weight them by customer lifetime value. Reddit requires a 10,000-user website seed or 1,000 matched customer-list users, with no documented value-based equivalent. For a SaaS company with 300 closed-won customers and customer lifetime value data in its customer relationship management (CRM) system, Meta can act on that seed today. Reddit's minimum seed requirements exclude it.
  • Scale. Meta's audience and inventory can absorb budgets that Reddit cannot, especially within narrow B2B verticals.

Choose Meta when audience depth, mature seed modeling, or sustained budget capacity matters more than community precision.

Cost benchmarks (directional only)

Neither platform publishes platform-wide average CPCs or CPMs; both run auctions. Reddit's official figures are format-specific: image ads typically run $2–$8 CPM and $0.10–$0.30 CPC, while conversation ads run $5–$25 CPM. Meta publishes no dollar averages, only the direction of pricing in earnings reports.

The B2B comparison comes from Refine Labs' Q1 2026 benchmarks for managed awareness accounts.

  • Reddit's B2B awareness CPM exceeded Meta's in that dataset.
  • LinkedIn remained considerably more expensive than both platforms.
  • Reddit's prices are rising, so any cost advantage within a niche may continue to shrink.

Use all of these figures only as directional inputs. Objective and vertical affect them. Geography does too.

Deciding where to test first

  • ICP community presence is the strongest single signal. Spend an hour in r/sysadmin, r/devops, or r/salesoperations before spending a dollar. If your product category is already being discussed by your buyers, Reddit is viable. If you can't name the subreddit, it isn't.
  • Annual contract value (ACV) and sales-cycle math affect whether the economics work. Reddit is best suited to mid-to-high ACV B2B offers; a $20/month tool for solo users makes the payback window brutal. Reddit conversions often lag ad exposure, so short attribution windows can make a working campaign look dead.
  • Creative readiness differs by platform. Recycling Meta creative onto Reddit is the most common failure. Redditors spot stock-photo ads instantly and say so in your comments. Problem-led, native-feeling creative works better than copy transplanted from another platform. Meta cuts the other way: Andromeda and GEM reward high-signal creative, so a strong short-form video library argues for Meta.
  • Attribution infrastructure must be in place. Reddit is sunsetting onsite lead forms, so Pixel or Conversions API (CAPI) setup will be required for lead generation campaigns. Without server-side tracking and CRM pipeline visibility, you can't judge the test properly. Fix that before the first dollar.

Test Reddit first if your ICP gathers in named, active subreddits; ACV is mid-to-high; you can write problem-led, native-feeling creative; and CAPI, campaign-link tracking, and CRM pipeline tracking are live.

Stick with Meta if no relevant subreddit exists; retargeting is the primary need; your seed audiences are small; or your attribution setup is weak.

On budget: Understory's Reddit Ads guidance recommends starting small with two or three high-intent subreddits, separate ad groups for each, and daily budgets that can range from $50–$100/day for awareness to $200–$500/day for bottom-funnel conversions. We've written a full Reddit Ads guide covering setup mechanics.

Ad engagement can also shape outbound. Upload your outbound target list as a customer-list audience so prospects see ads during sales outreach sequences. Then tailor follow-up messages based on ad engagement. That's the core of allbound marketing: an ad click changes the outbound email, and an outbound reply changes the retargeting ad. The same logic works within Reddit.

FAQ

Is Reddit advertising cheaper than Meta? Sometimes, and less often than it used to be. Actual costs depend on your objective, vertical, geography, and audience fit, regardless of Reddit's published image-ad ranges. Its cost advantage is also shrinking.

Do Reddit ads work for B2B? Yes, especially for technical audiences with strong subreddit alignment. Results weaken when community fit or attribution tracking is missing.

What's the minimum budget for a Reddit ad campaign? A real validation test needs a few thousand dollars over 30–45 days. That gives the campaign enough time and budget to compare communities and creative approaches.

How do Reddit ad costs compare to SaaS LinkedIn ads? Reddit generally runs far cheaper. Use qualified pipeline as the basis for comparison; clicks or CPMs alone provide an incomplete view.

Coordinate paid media testing with Understory's allbound execution

Running a clean Reddit-vs-Meta test requires CAPI setup and native creative for each platform. Outbound sequences also need to respond to ad engagement. Coordinating that across separate vendors is exactly the overhead that eats your quarter. Understory handles paid media and signal-based outbound under one team, with creative integrated into both, so channel tests connect directly to pipeline. Book an intro call and we'll map which channel your ICP actually lives on.
